COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Ohio State has reportedly chosen its new offensive coordinator to replace national title winner Chip Kelly. And it will be an in-house promotion.
Wide receivers coach Brian Hartline is expected to be promoted by head coach Ryan Day as the new offensive coordinator, according to multiple reports. The 38-year-old from Canton has been part of Ohio State’s coaching staff since 2017 and will replace Kelly. Hartline was the co-offensive coordinator with Kelly last season and served as the OC in the 2023 season.
Kelly spent one season in Columbus and helped the Buckeyes win the 2024 national championship in the inaugural 12-team playoff. He was announced as the new offensive coordinator for the Las Vegas Raiders on Tuesday.
Hartline played for the Buckeyes in the mid-2000s and was one of the key pass catchers in Ohio State’s run to the 2008 national championship game. He was drafted in the fourth round of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins, where he played for six seasons.
After he played the 2015 with the Cleveland Browns, Hartline retired and became Ohio State’s offensive quality control assistant in 2017. One season later he was promoted as the wide receivers coach, where he developed multiple first round NFL draft picks such as Chris Olave, Garrett Wilson, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and Marvin Harrison Jr.
The Buckeyes are still searching for a new defensive coordinator after Jim Knowles accepted an offer from Penn State to serve in the same role. Ohio State is set to hire Virginia Tech offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen as its next offensive line coach, per NBC4’s sister station in Roanoke, Virginia, after Justin Frye took the same position at the Arizona Cardinals.
Bowen has been the offensive coordinator of the Hokies since 2022 and has had coaching positions at five different schools before coming to Columbus. In 2021, he was the tight ends coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars under ex-Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer.
Ryan Day and the Buckeyes begin their national title defense on Aug. 30 when they host Texas at Ohio Stadium in a rematch of last season’s Cotton Bowl, which also served as a playoff semifinal.
