COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Ohio State athletic director Ross Bjork has been in his position for a little less than a year. But it has been one of the most critical time periods in the world of college sports.
Since taking the reigns on July 1, Bjork already has been part of a national championship run with the football’s team title in the first 12-team playoff. After the Buckeyes beat Notre Dame to win the College Football Playoff, head coach Ryan Day signed a new seven-year contract extension worth $12.5 million in total annual compensation.
NBC4’s Whitney Harding sat one-on-one with Bjork to discuss a variety of topics but started right off discussing Day’s new contract. You can watch the full interview in the video player below with other topics discussed include revenue-sharing, stadium renovations, and more.

“We we have the right leader. He does it the right way on and off the field. We have great young men of character. We recruit at the highest level, both on and off the field. We have high academic standards. Well, all of that stems from somewhere in somebody. And that somebody is Coach Ryan Day,” Bjork said. “And so locking this up in the right timeframe, it sends a message that we have the right guy and that we’re here to stay and that we want this momentum to continue.”
Day’s success came during a new era of college football with the 12-team playoff bringing more teams a chance to win the title. Bjork believes as this new era unfolds further, you will see even more parity in the sport.
“You definitely saw that Arizona State emerged. SMU emerged. Right. The Big Ten, we had Indiana as a playoff team. So I think you’re going to see more parity come in for sure,” Bjork said.
He also touched on a potential new format with many pointing to eliminating conference champions getting automatic byes. “There’s a difference between ranking and seeding. We were ranked sixth but seeded eight. Yeah, created some false matchups. So all of those things I think will come into the equation of what you’re talking about as far as, you know, continuity and long term success,” Bjork said.
