COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Fresh off its top five win over Penn State, the Buckeyes turn the page towards a meeting with Purdue, Saturday at Ohio Stadium. Kickoff is set for noon.
During Tuesday’s weekly press conference, head coach Ryan Day gave an update on Tyleik Williams, who left Saturday’s game at Penn State with an injury.
“Tyleik’s doing good. He’s day to day,” Day said about the defensive tackle.
Tuesday also marks the release of the first College Football Playoff rankings of the season and the first in the newly expanded 12-team format. The initial set of rankings is expected to be announced at around 7 p.m.
Day said he won’t pay much attention to what the poll says as he prepares for the Boilermakers.
“Rankings right now for us don’t mean anything because you got to keep winning,” Day said. “Every time we walk off the field on a Sunday, no matter what happened the game before, that game is over with.”
OSU, which rose to third in the latest AP poll, is coming off its first win over a ranked opponent this season, defeating the Nittany Lions, 20-13. The defense came up with a goal-line stand late in the third quarter and then used an 11-play final drive consisting solely of runs to drain the clock and secure Day’s third victory over a top five opponent at Ohio State.
Howard threw for two touchdowns, completing 16-of-24 pass attempts for 182 yards. The Pennsylvania native recovered from an early interception to beat the team that overlooked him in high school. And looking back, Howard says his legs during that final drive that helped the Buckeyes the most.
“When the game is on the line, when it comes down to it, that’s when things happen,” Howard said. “It just makes it so much harder to defend us as a team and we’re more able to do that in those clutch situations.”
Much of Tuesday’s press conference was spent by Day and Howard praising the new look offensive line, which underwent changes due to injuries. With Josh Simmons done for the season and Zen Michalski still injured, Donovan Jackson moved to left tackle while Carson Hinzman started at left guard.
“We had a couple of different options there and some good options,” Day said. “But we felt like in this game, experience was the right thing to go with.”
Day said Hinzman will continue to start at left guard after his performance against the Nittany Lions proved he can handle the responsibilities.
The Boilermakers (1-7) are coming off an overtime loss to Northwestern and head coach Ryan Waters knows that it’ll be a tall order to pull off an upset on Saturday.
“You look at just their team in its entirety, very, very talented roster. You couple the talented roster with the level of coaching that is at Ohio State, I’ve got a lot of respect for a lot of those guys on the staff there,” Walters said. “That’s why you get a team like Ohio State.”
