COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — The No. 6 Ohio State Buckeyes look unlikely to make the last four-team College Football Playoff after a massive upset in Atlanta.
The No. 8 Alabama Crimson Tide upset No. 1 Georgia 27-24 to win the SEC title and hand the two-time defending national champions its first loss in two years. With the SEC title, Alabama and Georgia end the season at 12-1 and likely knock out any chance for Ohio State to make the CFP.
With little chance of making the semifinals, Ohio State looks likely to make a New Year’s Six bowl. The possible bowl games include the Orange Bowl, Cotton Bowl Classic, Fiesta Bowl, and Peach Bowl.
The first of four major conference championship games on Saturday was the Big 12 title game where the Texas Longhorns blitzed past Oklahoma State 49-21. Texas’ win puts them in the conversation alongside Alabama and Georgia with the Longhorns beating the now SEC champion Crimson Tide back in September in Tuscaloosa. Those factors give the committee a difficult decision between Alabama, Texas, and Georgia.
On Friday evening, OSU watched the Washington Huskies win the last Pac-12 title 34-31 over Oregon in Las Vegas. The Huskies sealed its perfect season with a 4th quarter rally, scoring two touchdowns to erase a four-point deficit and win the conference title. With the Huskies win, Washington all but sealed its first spot in the College Football Playoff since 2016.
Michigan shutout Iowa 26-0 to win its third straight Big Ten championship and likely clinch its first top-seed in the College Football Playoff with a 13-0 record. Florida State also closed out an unbeaten season with a 16-6 win over Louisville in the ACC title game.
The 13-0 Seminoles seem likely to make the playoff with the committee never leaving out an unbeaten Power Five team. A case can be made for FSU though to be left out with Alabama, Texas, and Georgia all having strong cases despite having a loss, creating what should be an intriguing selection show.
The 2023 CFP, the last one to have four teams before expanding to 12 next season, begins on Jan. 1 with the semifinals at the Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl. The national championship game will be played in Houston on Jan. 8.
