WASHINGTON (WCMH) — Vice President JD Vance fumbled the national championship trophy on Monday while the Ohio State Buckeyes were visiting the White House to celebrate their title.

After remarks from President Donald Trump, Vance and coach Ryan Day, the team posed for photos with a Buckeyes helmet and a custom Trump 47 jersey.

During the photo op, Vance, an Ohio State graduate, attempted to pick up the trophy when the base appeared to break off and fell. The top half of the trophy was caught by running back TreVeyon Henderson, who was standing next to Vance.

Those nearby laughed about the situation, and Day walked over and said something to the vice president.

“I didn’t want anyone after Ohio State to get the trophy so I decided to break it,” Vance said in a post on X.

The Buckeyes were at The White House on Monday to celebrate their championship win over Notre Dame.

Several high-ranking university and state officials were there, including Ohio State President Ted Carter and Gov. Mike DeWine, although louder cheers came for DeWine’s lieutenant governor, Jim Tressel, who coached the Buckeyes from 2001 to 2010.

Trump drew applause by referring to Ohio State’s rival as That Team Up North in his remarks, but Vance was met by boos when he mentioned Michigan by name. The Buckeyes’ tour of Washington also included a stop earlier in the day at the Lincoln Memorial, as seen in a social media post.
