COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — After a 52-6 rout of opponent Akron, Ohio State looks forward to a matchup against another Mid-American Conference opponent in Week 2.
The Buckeyes will play Western Michigan on Saturday with kickoff at Ohio Stadium set for 7:30 p.m. The Broncos are coming off a 28-14 loss at Wisconsin in their opener.
Despite the lopsided score in the opener, Day said his team is nowhere near where they want to be yet.
“It’s so many things across the board,” Day said. “Little things across the board. When you have a bunch of those things, it adds up. The foundation hasn’t been built yet.”
Day also said quarterback Will Howard looked confident in his first game with Ohio State since transferring from Kansas State. But he also said that the QB has to work on his decision making.
“He’s big in the pocket. But he also has speed and once he gets going, he can hurt you with his feet,” Day said. “When you can steal a couple of third downs with some scrambles, you can extend plays which allows receivers to get down the field.”
Saturday marked the first time Kelly coached from the press box since 2008 when he was offensive coordinator at Oregon. While it’s a different view from what he’s accustomed to, it’s something that the Buckeyes prepared for and practiced heading into the season.
“It’s a great view. I think the games get into October and November, people will be a bit jealous,” Kelly said “I think you can see the game better from up top but you can get a better feel from the field.”
Howard is coming off a three-touchdown performance in his debut, with two of those throws finding freshman receiver Jeremiah Smith, who became the first OSU freshman to score twice in his Buckeyes debut since 1996.
The Ohio State quarterback said that he was proud of his decision making once he was able to settle in against Akron.
“Sometimes, I didn’t make the perfect decision, but if you’re on time, that can make up for a poor decision,” Howard said. “That’s the biggest thing, ironing out some decisions and looking at how we can start faster and get into a rhythm quicker and play clean.”
