COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — For the first time in 11 years, college football fans can hit the gridiron virtually in a new game and Ohio State fans will be able to play out the 2024 season early.
EA Sports’ “College Football 25,” the first iteration of the video game to be released since 2013, became available to play on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X for those that preordered the deluxe edition. The game will release on Friday for those that did not preorder.
Buckeyes fans will be able to experience all the traditions they are used to seeing on a Saturday at Ohio Stadium. Script Ohio is shown, along with the dotting of the “I,” and “Buckeye Battle Cry” plays. Brutus appears, and fireworks go off for Ohio State touchdowns.
As far as the uniforms, the Buckeyes have their all scarlet, grey, and black uniforms in the game, with players able to combine helmets, jerseys and pants from all the uniforms to create new combinations. Every FBS school is fully licensed in the game.
College football players are also realistically emulated in the game after Name, Image, and Likeness rules prompted the ability to have players in the game. EA said players that opted in were compensated, including many Buckeyes.
A majority of the 2024 Ohio State roster is in the game, with the top-rated players being running back Quinshon Judkins (95 overall) and safety Caleb Downs (95). Many other notable players, from quarterback Will Howard to the starting receiving core, are represented. A major omission is defensive end J.T. Tuimoloau, who opted to return for his senior season but not into the video game.
The Buckeyes are rated as the second best overall team with a rating of 93. Georgia is ranked as the top team with a 95 overall rating. Ohio State’s defense is rated as the best in the game at 96 and No. 5 in offense at 89.
