COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — A fight at Ohio Stadium between Ohio State and Michigan players was just the first across college football’s rivalry week.

Wolverines players planted a team flag at midfield after upsetting the second-ranked Buckeyes 13-10 Saturday, leading to a brawl between players that ended with police separating the sides using pepper spray.

Teams around the country followed suit after road wins over rivals Saturday night with flag plantings and fights from coast-to-coast. Here is what we know about the rivalry games that ended with or nearly ended with a midfield melee.

Michigan 13, No. 2 Ohio State 10

A midfield brawl between Ohio State and Michigan players will be the lasting image of the 120th edition of The Game. The Wolverines’ fourth consecutive victory over the Buckeyes ended with offensive lineman Raheem Anderson and running back Terrence Dunlap planting a flag at midfield.

Buckeyes players that were in the middle of the traditional singing of Carmen Ohio sprinted to meet the Michigan players, leading to the scuffles. Buckeyes defensive end Jack Sawyer was seen on video ripping the flag away and throwing it on the field.

Police broke up the altercations and used pepper spray, affecting multiple Michigan players and at least one member of the NBC4 team. One Ohio State police officer was injured in the incident. For more details, follow this link.

Michigan’s win knocked Ohio State out of Big Ten championship contention. The Buckeyes have not beaten the Wolverines since 2019.

Florida 31, Florida State 11

After Florida beat Florida State in the Sunshine Showdown in Tallahassee, Gators defensive end George Gumbs Jr. grabbed his team flag and stabbed it into the Seminoles’ logo at the 50-yard line.

Seminoles players immediately followed Gumbs and began to scuffle for around one minute with Florida players. In the midst of that, Florida State coach Mike Norvell grabbed the flag and threw it onto the turf. Norvell then shook the hand of Florida coach Billy Napier, who apologized for his team’s behavior after the game.

The Gators’ win was their first in Tallahassee since 2018 as they await a bowl game berth. Florida State ended its season with a 2-10 record.

North Carolina State 35, North Carolina 30

The scene became ugly fast in Chapel Hill after the Tar Heels fell to North Carolina State 35-30. As UNC coach Mack Brown was shaking hands with Wolfpack coach Dave Doeren, N.C. State players planted a team flag at midfield, leading to a massive brawl.

North Carolina and N.C. State players threw punches in the middle of the field, with some ending up on the ground as a result of the fight. In the midst of that, Tar Heels receiver Tylee Craft quickly grabbed the Wolfpack flag and hurled it towards a sideline. Craft was then confronted and pushed by N.C. State safety DK Kaufman and tackle Jacarrius Peak, who retrieved the flag and took a victory lap.

Brown, who coached his final game with North Carolina, congratulated N.C. State on the win and reemphasized his opinion from 2022 that planting a flag at midfield is “disrespectful”. N.C. State’s win clinched a 6-6 record and bowl eligibility. North Carolina ends its regular season 6-6 as well and awaits a bowl game.

No. 3 Texas 17, No. 20 Texas A&M 7

The game with the most stakes for rivalry week avoided ending with a brawl. After third-ranked Texas’ win over Texas A&M, coach Steve Sarkisian was embracing players before seeing a group of his players rushing to plant a flag at midfield.

Sarkisian jogged to the Aggies logo at the 50 yard line and gestured to his players to back off and not plant a flag. The Longhorns players promptly gathered and walked away. The Texas coach cited seeing what happened between Ohio State and Michigan as the reason he demanded his players not plant a flag.

Texas will play for the Southeastern Conference title against Georgia next week. The winner will earn a bye into the quarterfinals of the College Football Playoff.

No. 16 Arizona State 49, Arizona 7

Tempers flared at the end of the Duel in the Desert after the Sun Devils crushed the Wildcats in Tucson. Arizona State defensive end Jacob Kongaika planted a pitchfork on the midfield Arizona logo. Just as the pitchfork pierced the ground, multiple Arizona players came to grab the pitchfork and began to tussle with Kongaika.

Players from both teams rushed to midfield to break up the fight with more pushing and shoving following. A full-on brawl was avoided. Arizona State is set to face Iowa State next week in the Big 12 championship game. The winner will clinch a spot in the College Football Playoff.
