GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., Ohio (WCMH) – Nearly 8,000 fans turned out to see the Columbus Fury take on the Grand Rapids Rise in both of the franchises’ inaugural match in the Pro Volleyball Federation.

The Rise defeated the Fury in straight sets – 25-17, 25-23, 25-19 – in which Grand Rapids maintained control throughout most of the match.

Former Ohio State Buckeye Valeria Leon had 13 digs and Reagan Cooper had nine kills for the Fury, who totaled 26 kills for the match. Leon and Priscilla Maria Schlegel combined for 23 of the team’s 49 total digs.

Grand Rapids took control early and cruised to leads of 17-10 and 24-16 before closing out the first set. The second set saw 10 lead changes with the Fury up 20-17 late in the set, but the Rise went on a 8-3 run to take a 2-0 lead. The Rise took an early 5-0 lead in the third set and maintained a five or six-point advantage throughout.

Chaussee Clarie had a game-high 21 kills for the Rise, who totaled 46 kills, 10 blocks and six aces.

The Fury next play Feb. 16 at Orlando and play their first home-opener on Feb. 21, versus the Omaha Supernovas, at Nationwide Arena.
