COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Columbus sports teams held moments of silence Saturday to honor Columbus Blue Jackets forward Johnny Gaudreau, who died Thursday evening when he and his brother were struck by a suspected drunk driver.

Ohio State played Akron Saturday afternoon, and before kick-off, the stadium fell silent in memory of Johnny Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew. Over 100,000 attendees acknowledged the loss of the brothers before play commenced.

The Columbus Crew also honored the Gaudreau brothers before it’s game against NYCFC. In the 13th minute — a tribute to the number he wore — a memorial photo was shown as the Nordecke quieted. Fans in the stands held up signs with the number 13, CBJ pennants and a large banner depicting the two brothers in hockey jerseys. Finally, the crowd chanted “Johnny Hockey” in recognition of the loss.

Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau were killed Thursday evening during a bike ride when a suspected drunk driver struck them both. They were in southern New Jersey for their sister’s wedding, and leave behind loving families, teammates and a city in mourning.
