DAYTON, Ohio (WCMH) — For the first time in Ohio history, two Columbus area teams squared off for the boys OHSAA Division I state basketball title. And in another first, the Pioneers came out on top.

Olentangy Orange defeated Reynoldsburg, 56-41, to lift the school’s first state championship. The Pioneers were led by Ellis Appiah, who scored 20 points and rejuvenated an offense that struggled to score in the first half.

The victory marked Orange’s 15th consecutive win to finish 26-2 on the season.

Appiah scored 11 of the Pioneers’ 30 third-quarter points, including three shots from downtown. His performance provided a much needed jolt for Olentangy Orange after leading 17-14 at halftime.

Treyton Schroeder made four three-pointers to finish with 12 points and five rebounds for the Pioneers while Levi Davis added ten of his own.

“Is this a real feeling? I mean, I’ll be like seeing this in two years from now down the road. I’m going to look back on this,” Davis said. “I’m going to remember every moment. My family understands the whole community is behind us. It’s a great thing to bring back home.”

Reynoldsburg, which had its best finish in tournament history as state runners-up, completes the year with a 26-2 record.

Earlier Saturday, Columbus Academy fell short of its first state title when the Vikings lost to Lutheran East 53-49.

“You couldn’t ask for a better group that a group of guys you know that was hard I didn’t prepare anything in the locker room for getting beat,” Columbus Academy coach Jeff Warstler said. “So, you know, it was it was tough. You know, it’s I don’t I don’t know if words would do justice to how I feel about those guys.”

This is the second time the Vikings finished as state runners-up. Academy was competing in its first state championship since 1981.
