COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — It was Championship Sunday at the Schottenstein Center with several central Ohio athletes taking the top of the podium at the OHSAA state wrestling meet.
The Olentangy Orange girls made history by capturing the state team championship. With nine athletes qualifying for the year-end meet, the Pioneers lived up to their nickname, scoring 95 points to dethrone last year’s winners, Harrison, by 12 points.
“I didn’t think it would take five years but I’m really proud of the girls and I feel very thankful that I get to coach them. I’m 50 years old, it’s a young man’s game so I was excited to coach this group of girls,” Orange head coach Brian Nicola said. “We’ve got an amazing group of coaches, boosters in the community that supports them. We feel the love and I’m glad they were able to take home the title.”
Two Pioneers finished as state runners-up with Mackenzie Carder placing second in the 110-pound division and Surraiya Mahmud taking silver in the 155-pound weight class. Two other Orange grapplers – Lydia Heinrich (170) and Kascidy Garren (190) – finished third, while Joise Nickoloff (120) placed sixth. The team title victory validated years of hard work that began when the program started in 2019.
“My favorite thing about this group is that we had a lot of girls that chose different weight classes. Went out of weight class to help the team. And really helped themselves get in the best position to get everybody in the lineup,” Nicola said. “They’re a very selfless group. They’re easy to coach and they deserve everything.”
DeSales’ Max Shulaw takes back-to-back state crowns
In the Division II 215-pound weight division, senior Max Shulaw earned a repeat state title. He capped off his high school career with a pin in 3:08 over Wapakoneta’s Jace Knous during the second period of the final. The University of Virginia prospect helped the Stallions finish third as a team.
“I wrestled this kid here at districts last week and I wrestled him at the regional state duals a couple of weeks prior to that. So I knew I could beat him,” Shulaw said. “It was just a matter of keeping my head on straight and keeping good positioning. Staying in solid position and doing all the things right.”
Shulaw won every match of the state meet by way of a pin and finished his senior season with a 45-1 record.
Coffman’s Birden repeats, Watterson’s Boyle wins first title
Elsewhere on the final night of the state meet, Dublin Coffman’s Ethan Birden won a second straight title with a 4-3 decision over Perry’s Landen Johnson at the 165 pound weight class in Division I.
In the same weight division, Watterson’s Michael Boyle earned a 5-1 decision over Bryce’s Michael Kohler to win the Division II crown. He becomes the third freshman in as many years to win gold for the Eagles.
Also in Division II, Hartley’s Aiden King defeated Adam Heckman of Howland with an 11-7 decision in the 132-pound division and Bexley‘s Marius Garcia won the 106-pound title by beating Ontario’s Aiden Ohl, 5-4, capping a perfect season with a 51-0 record.
