COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Three Central Ohio boys basketball teams joined Columbus Academy in punching their tickets to state championship weekend in Dayton, with two set to clash for the OHSAA Division I title on Saturday night.
Olentangy Orange is in its first state championship game after outlasting Cleveland St. Ignatius in an overtime thriller on Sunday at Canton Field House. The Pioneers controlled the first half but the Wildcats turned the tide toward the end of the third quarter to trail Orange by two heading into the final eight minutes.
“A lot of ups and downs in that game. We came into halftime up a lot. Saying that we’d have to piss our pants and give up the game if we lose this one. Which we almost did,” senior guard Devin Brown said. “We had some costly mistakes but one thing about our team is that we just never give up. We stayed consistent and we were built for this moment.”
After regulation ended tied at 46, Levi Davis buried a corner three to put Orange up by one with two minutes to go. Moments later, Davis, who led Orange with 16 points, found Keegan Knupp for a dunk to help the Pioneers win 58-54. Four different players scored in double digits for Orange.
“They love playing hard for each other,” head coach Anthony Calo said. “It just took a lot of things that are deep instilled in our culture. A lot of our culture in my opinion showed up late in that game.”
The Pioneers will meet Reynoldsburg, who defeated Lakota West in a thrilling semifinal of their own. In the game’s final moments, Jordan Fisher had a chance to tie the game with two free throws with the Raiders down two. But after missing the second free throw, the ball went out of bounds off of Lakota West, giving Reynoldsburg another chance.
On the inbounds pass, Xavier McKinney scored the layup at the buzzer to give the Raiders the 64-63 win and set up the all-central Ohio showdown for the Division I title in Dayton on Saturday at 8:30 p.m.
In Division II, Westerville North will compete for a state title after defeating St. Francis de Sales easily, 73-52. Micah Young led all scorers with 29 points, going 12-of-18 from the field. The Warriors are one win away from their first state title since the mid 1990s and will face Massillon Perry on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Columbus Academy booked its spot in the Division V state championship on Friday when the Vikings defeated Summit Country Day 63-51. Academy is one win away from a perfect season, entering Dayton with a 28-0 record. The Vikings will play Lutheran East on Saturday at 10:45 a.m.
Central Ohio has already been successful this season on the hardwood after the Pickerington Central girls basketball team brought home its eighth state championship after beating Princeton on Saturday.
