COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – A scheduling error has resulted in a Columbus City Schools boys basketball team being removed from the city league championship.
Columbus City Schools Superintendent Dr. Angela Chapman said in a release Monday that Linden-McKinley has played more than the regulated 22 regular season games put in place by the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA).
The Panthers played their 22nd game of the season on Feb. 9. against Whetstone; the city title game would have been the team’s 23rd. The team has a 16-6 overall record and a 13-1 city league record, which earned them a share of the North Division title.
Chapman said an investigation will be conducted to determine where the scheduling error happened.
“Our priority is to understand what went wrong and implement measures to prevent similar mistakes in the future,” Chapman wrote in her statement.
Northland will take Linden-McKinley’s place in the City League Boys Basketball Championship Game against South High School on Feb. 17
“We extend our best wishes to the Linden-McKinley Panthers for having an outstanding season and to the Northland Vikings as they advance to the championship game,” Chapman wrote.
According to OHSAA guidelines, the decision doesn’t end the Panthers’ season. Linden-McKinley will be the seventh seed in the OHSAA Central 2 District tournament and will play either Hamilton or Bexley on March 2.
