COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — In its first-ever appearance in the state championship game, Upper Arlington dominated powerhouse Cleveland St. Ignatius, 5-2, to claim its maiden OHSAA title in boys hockey at Nationwide Arena.

After a scoreless first period, the Golden Bears scored five goals in a row with Ben Spence and Jason Davis finding the back of the net twice. Goalie Mason Herndon made 34 saves in the victory.

“We were talking about how we needed to play for our goalie because he kept us in it for most of the game,” forward Jason Davis said. “We needed to step up and put some pucks in the net.”

Spence opened the scoring 64 seconds into the first period when he poked the puck through off a shot from Tate Rook, who made two assists Sunday. The game remained 1-0 until the third when Conner Hagkull lit the lantern at the 1:08 mark. Less than 90 seconds later, Upper Arlington took a commanding 3-0 lead after Davis’ shot slipped past goalie Dominic Filizetti.

Spence went top shelf for his second goal of the game at the 6:11 mark of the final period while Davis wrapped up the scoring by taking advantage of an empty net when Filizetti was drawn out of the pipes at the 7:47 mark.

Nick Miller and Sam Elwell scored in the game’s final seconds for St. Ignatius to avoid the shutout.

“First time ever winning the state championship, it’s just an amazing thing to be part of and I’m glad I was able to do it with this group with all the seniors,” Spence said. “I was feeling good knowing that we had the whole crowd behind us. Our student section really helped us with the vibes in the building. That really helped.”
