COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — The Columbus Crew remain one of the last two unbeaten teams in Major League Soccer and have now acquired one of the best attacking midfielders in the league.
A source confirmed to NBC4’s Whitney Harding that the Crew have agreed to terms with the Philadelphia Union to acquire Hungarian midfielder Daniel Gazdag. The deal was finalized on Friday, according to the team.
The deal is a cash-for-player trade, the team said, in exchange for $4 million and up to $500,000 in conditional performance-based incentives. The Hungarian international is under contract for the 2025 season with a Club option for 2026.
Gazdag is set to be a central cog in the Crew’s attacking machine after losing superstar striker Cucho Hernandez this offseason to Real Betis. The 29-year-old from Hungary has been with the Union since 2021 and became one of the most productive midfielders in the league.
He has at least 14 goals in MLS play in each of the past three seasons, including a 22-goal season in 2022 that earned him MLS Best XI honors. In six 2025 games with Philadelphia, Gazdag has already scored two goals and notched two assists. He has also been part of the Hungarian national team since 2019, earning 29 appearances and being part of the UEFA Euro 2024 squad.
Head coach Wilfried Nancy will hope Gazdag can reignite the Columbus Crew attack, which has only scored 10 goals in seven MLS games thus far. Despite the lack of goals, the Black & Gold are undefeated this season with four wins and three draws, sitting in first place in the Eastern Conference.
Gazdag could make his Crew debut this Sunday when they face St. Louis CITY SC on the road at 7 p.m. The following match for Columbus will be in Cleveland when it takes on Lionel Messi and Inter Miami at 4:30 p.m. from Huntington Bank Field.
If the Crew and Miami get through Sunday without losing, each club will enter the match in Cleveland undefeated in MLS play.
