COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — The Columbus Crew has discovered who they will face in the Round of 16 of the CONCACAF Champions Cup.
The Black & Gold will face the Houston Dynamo in its opening round of the continental club competition in which the champion books a spot in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. Columbus will go to Houston on Mar. 6 for the first leg at 8 p.m. and host the second leg on Mar. 12 at 6 p.m.
The Dynamo’s 1-0 win over St. Louis CITY SC Tuesday night allowed them to advance to the next round despite a 2-2 aggregate tie. Because of Houston’s goal in the 2-1 loss in St. Louis, they advanced on the away goals tiebreaker.
In the Round of 16, opponents play two games with the combined goals from those two matches determining who advances to the quarterfinals. If the teams are tied on goals after two games, the first tiebreaker is which team scored more away goals. If that is equal as well, the second leg goes to extra time and possibly penalties.
Columbus or Houston will face the winner of the Round of 16 tie between Mexican club UANL Tigres and Orlando City.
The Dynamo are looking to make a natural leap up this season after a successful 2023. Houston won the U.S. Open Cup last season for its first trophy since 2018 and made the Western Conference final, losing to Los Angeles FC.
Houston beat Columbus last season 2-0 in an August MLS game at home to extend an unbeaten run against the Crew to three straight. The Dynamo’s general manager is former Crew assistant coach and general manager Pat Onstad, who was the goalkeeper for Houston when they won the 2006 and 2007 MLS Cup finals.
Among the other Round of 16 fixtures to watch in the Champions Cup include a heated Mexican rivalry between Club America and Chivas Guadalajara. Expected matchups also include FC Cincinnati taking on Mexico’s Monterrey, who have former FCC striker Brandon Vazquez, and Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami taking on Nashville SC in a rematch of the 2023 Leagues Cup final.
Cincinnati and Nashville have leads and are expected to advance on Wednesday evening.

Among the clubs that have qualified for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup include Monterrey, Seattle Sounders, Neymar’s Al-Hilal from Saudi Arabia, and European giants Real Madrid, Manchester City, and Bayern Munich. 32 teams will play in the tournament from June 15-July 13, 2025 in the United States.
The Crew began its 2024 season with a 1-0 win over Atlanta United at Lower.com Field. Columbus will play at Minnesota United on Saturday to begin a stretch of five games in two weeks.
