COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — The Columbus Crew will enshrine the fourth member of its Circle of Honor this summer and it’s the club’s only MLS MVP winner.
The club announced that Argentinian midfielder Guillermo Barros Schelotto will be recognized as a member of the Crew Circle of Honor, joining Sigi Schmid, Schelotto’s manager with the Crew, and teammates Frankie Hejduk, and Brian McBride.
Barros Schelotto will be inducted during the Crew’s July 19 game at Lower.com Field against D.C. United. Due to his responsibilities as head coach of Argentine club Atletico Velez Sarsfield, he will be unable to attend the ceremony.
“Guillermo is more than worthy of our Club’s highest recognition with his induction in the Crew Circle of Honor. He is a true Crew Legend for the exceptional talent he consistently displayed, his ability to make his teammates and the collective better and his competitiveness, all of which played a key role in bringing trophies to Columbus,” stated Crew General Manager Issa Tall. “It’s also special knowing Guillermo remains incredibly passionate about this Club and our city, and we are eager to welcome him home again soon.”
During his four seasons in Columbus, Barros Schelotto became an MLS superstar and was a massive part in leading the Crew to its maiden MLS Cup title in 2008. During that 2008 season, he scored seven goals and provided 19 assists to win the MLS MVP award. He remains the only Black & Gold player to be named league MVP.
Barros Schelotto provided six assists during the Crew’s MLS Cup Playoffs run that culminated with the team’s 3-1 win in the final over the New York Red Bulls in Carson, California. He assisted all three goals in the final.
In 102 regular season games, the Argentine playmaker scored 33 goals and notched 41 assists and was named an all-star each season he played in Columbus. In addition to the 2008 MLS Cup triumph, he led the team to consecutive Supporters’ Shields in 2008 and 2009.
For a player to be considered for the Crew’s Circle of Honor, he must have appeared in 100 games for the club, won an MLS sanctioned competition or been named an all-star or served as captain during a major final or won a Crew individual award.
