COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Several members of the Columbus Crew will be taking time off in June to play for their countries in World Cup qualifiers.
Seven Black & Gold players will trade the Columbus colors for their international teams as the June international break is set to take place over the next week. The CONCACAF Gold Cup will be the lone major international men’s tournament this summer and will be played in the United States.
Here are the players set to represent their national teams in three different continents:
Max Arfsten (USA)
Arfsten is the lone Black & Gold player who is part of the United States’ roster for this summer’s Gold Cup. Goalkeeper Patrick Schulte and midfielder Sean Zawadzki were originally called up by USMNT boss Mauricio Pochettino for the roster but both were dropped after suffering injuries against Charlotte FC on May 24.
The 24-year-old Arfsten has played three times with the senior United States team and hopes to add to that tally in a major tournament. After friendlies against Turkiye and Switzerland, the USMNT opens Gold Cup play against Trinidad & Tobago in San Jose on June 15.
USA schedule: Turkiye (Friendly – June 7), Switzerland (Friendly – June 10), Trinidad & Tobago (Gold Cup – June 15), Saudi Arabia (Gold Cup – June 19), Haiti (Gold Cup – June 22), potential knockout games.
Taha Habroune (USA under-20s)
Also representing the Stars & Stripes this month will be young midfielder Taha Habroune. He will join the Americans’ under-20 side for a camp in Cairo, Egypt, for a week and play in two friendly matches against Colombia and Egypt.
Habroune hopes to be part of the squad that goes to Chile this fall for the U-20 World Cup. The first game for the USA U-20 side will be on Sept. 29 against New Caledonia. The Americans will also play France and South Africa in group play.
USA U-20 schedule: Colombia (June 7) and Egypt (June 10)
Nicholas Hagen (Guatemala)
The Crew once again are in an unfortunate spot from a goalkeeper standpoint with Schulte currently injured and his backup, Nicholas Hagen, set to play for Guatemala in the Gold Cup.
The 28-year-old has become the consistent starting goalie for Los Chapines in what will be a momentous window for the side. Before Gold Cup play, Guatemala will face World Cup qualifiers against the Dominican Republic and Jamaica in its bid to qualify for its maiden World Cup. The side must finish in the top two in its qualifying group to advance to the next round.
Guatemala schedule: Dominican Republic (WCQ – June 6), Jamaica (WCQ – June 10), Jamaica (Gold Cup – June 16), Panama (Gold Cup – June 20), Guadeloupe (Gold Cup – June 24), potential knockout games.
Daniel Gazdag (Hungary)
Over in Europe, the 29-year-old Hungarian midfielder Daniel Gazdag will trade the black and gold for green and red. Gazdag has started to become a consistent member of the senior Hungarian team, making 29 appearances and scoring four times since 2019.
Hungary will play friendlies against Sweden in Budapest and Azerbaijan in Baku in preparation for this fall’s World Cup qualifiers. The Magyars are in a group with Portugal, Ireland, and Armenia and if they win the group, they will qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1986.
Hungary schedule: Sweden (June 6) and Azerbaijan (June 10)
Yevhen Cheberko (Ukraine)
In a similar boat is Crew defender Yevhen Cheberko with the Ukrainian national team. The regular starter for the Black & Gold hopes to become a consistent name on the team sheet for his country with just one appearance.
Ukraine will be in Toronto to play friendlies against Canada and New Zealand, two sides that have already assured World Cup qualification. Cheberko and company are in a World Cup qualifying group with France, Iceland, and Azerbaijan and hope to qualify for the tournament for the first time since 2006.
Ukraine schedule: Canada (June 7) and New Zealand (June 10)
Mo Farsi (Algeria)
The Crew also has representation in Africa as fullback Mo Farsi is back with Algeria for this June window. It has been less than a year since Farsi made his Algeria debut and he looks primed for more game time in two friendlies this month.
Les Fennecs, who sit in good position to qualify for the World Cup, will play Rwanda and Sweden this month to prepare. After African World Cup qualifiers end in November, 24 teams will play in Morocco for the Africa Cup of Nations. Algeria is in Group E of that tournament with Burkina Faso, Equatorial Guinea, and Sudan.
Algeria schedule: Rwanda (June 5) and Sweden (June 10)
Steven Moreira (Cape Verde)
The MLS defender of the year is back to represent the Blue Sharks in June. Columbus’ Steven Moreira has played 13 times for Cape Verde, including at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations. Cape Verde has friendlies against Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur and Georgia in Kutaisi.
Despite being quarterfinalists at the last AFCON tournament, Cape Verde did not qualify for the upcoming edition. The Blue Sharks look set to earn a top-two place in its World Cup qualifying group with Cameroon. The winner of the group automatically qualifies for the World Cup, while the four best second-place teams have a second chance to qualify.
Cape Verde schedule: Malaysia (June 3) and Georgia (June 8)
