COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — The NBA on NBC is coming back after more than 20 years away.
NBC announced it is part of an 11-year, $76 billion deal for NBA media rights alongside Disney (ABC/ESPN) and Amazon. This means NBA games will be broadcast on NBC for the first time since the 2001-02 season, sources told the Associated Press. The Athletic was the first to report on the contracts.
As part of the new television deal, NBC would broadcast Tuesday night games throughout the season and Sunday night games after the NFL season concludes in January or February. Additionally, the streaming platform Peacock, owned by NBC and not by NBC4’s parent company Nexstar, would broadcast Monday night telecasts.
TNT Sports, which has been part of the league’s broadcasting family since the 1980s, could be on its way out, but has five days to match one of the deals.
NBA Playoffs media rights coverage has not been clarified at this time but ESPN/ABC would continue to serve as the television rights holder for the NBA Finals and one conference final.
NBC’s first stint broadcasting the NBA began in 1954 during the early years of the league, broadcasting through 1962. Its second stint came during the 1990s during the Michael Jordan era with NBC being the broadcast home for all six of Jordan’s NBA Finals titles with the Chicago Bulls.
The 2024-25 NBA season is scheduled to begin in mid-October as the Boston Celtics look to defend its NBA crown.
With the acquisition of NBA media rights, NBC Sports now has broadcast rights for two of the four major North American professional sports leagues, including the NFL. NBC also holds television deals with the Kentucky Derby, the Big Ten, Notre Dame football, the English Premier League, the Olympic Games, and more.
You can catch Olympic basketball action throughout the Paris Olympics this summer on NBC4, Peacock, and other NBC Universal channels.
