LAS VEGAS (WCMH) — Ohio State will be represented at Super Bowl LVIII by two players who are teammates for the second time in their careers.

The San Francisco 49ers will be hoping to stop Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs offense on Sunday with a strong defensive line, led by former Buckeyes Nick Bosa and Chase Young. While Bosa is playing in his second Super Bowl, this is new territory for Young, who recently joined the Niners from the Washington Commanders.

“Even in college, we never thought that we would ever be able to play with each other again,” Young told reporters in November. “I think it’s going to be just like in college, just a race to the quarterback, kind of. It’s going to be real fun; that’s all I know.”

Both have had similar career paths that took vastly different turns in 2022 until things came colliding again this year after Young was traded to San Francisco.

Young, 24, came from Maryland to Columbus in 2017 to team up with Bosa on the Buckeyes defensive line. That season, Bosa led the way for OSU as the sophomore registered 8.5 sacks in 14 games to become an All-American. Young, a freshman, played nine times and recorded 3.5 sacks.

In 2018, Young and Bosa were poised to be an unstoppable duo, but Bosa underwent surgery in September, ending his college career early as he prepped for the NFL draft. Young picked up the pieces and became the star, amassing 10.5 sacks for the Buckeyes to become one of the best defensive players in college football.

The two were separated in 2019 when Bosa was selected No. 2 overall by San Francisco in the draft and Young was prepping for his junior season. Both ended 2019 with numerous accolades. Bosa won NFL defensive rookie of the year, and Young won every top defensive player award in college football.

Young then joined the NFL and, like Bosa, was a second overall pick by Washington and followed that with a defensive rookie of the year award. In the years after, Young’s career in Washington was muddled by injuries and Bosa was considered a top defensive player in the league.

Now after both dealt with injuries and massive successes, the two will share the stage in Las Vegas, hoping to bring San Francisco its first Super Bowl in 30 years. Should Bosa, Young, and San Francisco beat Kansas City on Sunday, the two would become the first Buckeyes to win the Super Bowl as NFL teammates since 2012, when Jake Ballard and Jim Cordle won with the New York Giants.
