DUBLIN, Ohio (WCMH) — Despite a rollercoaster of a day at Muirfield, Scottie Scheffler extended his lead to four shots over the rest of the field heading into the final round of the Memorial Tournament.
The world’s no. 1 player is closing in on his first Memorial championship of his career after finishing third in his last two starts at Muirfield. But should Scheffler falter, three golfers are ready to take advantage, hungry for a title of their own.
“I think it’s going to get tougher, the greens are going to get firmer,” Scheffler said. “I would assume the fairways are going to get firmer as well and so it should be another tough day out there and looking forward to the challenge.”
Canadian Adam Hadwin, seeking his first win on the PGA Tour since 2017, is in a three-way tie for second place along with American Collin Morikawa and Austrian Sepp Straka, each at 6-under.
“[My game] has definitely been in a good spot, ball striking has been really good, so yeah, hopefully I can keep it rolling,” Straka said.
Hadwin knows that while he’s in second place, he’s got an uphill battle to climb during Sunday’s final round.
“I don’t know if I have a chance tomorrow. You know, you give four shots to the best player in the world, it’s kind of difficult. But I did go post 66 earlier this week, so hopefully do it again tomorrow,” Hadwin said.
Further down the leaderboard, defending champion Viktor Hovland is in a tie for 14th at 1-under after shooting 5-over 77 for the round, putting him in a tough spot to be the first repeat champion at the Memorial since Tiger Woods won three in a row from 1999-2001.
Rory McIlroy shot a 1-over 73 on Saturday to get within eight shots of Scheffler at 2-under for the tournament.
“Just sort of trying to hang in there, just sort of like the last couple of days as well. The course is obviously playing really tough,” McIlroy said. “The scores suggest that. It’s very hard to shoot.”

6:32 p.m. Scheffler remains the one to beat
As the third round comes to a close, Scottie Scheffler remains in front after an up and down day on the course. Despite two bogeys and a triple bogey, this year’s Masters champion also had six birdies during the third round, bringing him to 10-under overall, a four shot lead over the rest of the field.
The triple bogey came on the ninth hole when Scheffler’s original tee shot went to the left off course, causing him to redo his tee shot, using seven strokes to finish the par 4 ninth hole.
“I hadn’t really hit many shots off-line the whole day until that one. So, like I said, it was a slight pull. It wasn’t anything drastic. Just got a bad break,” Scheffler said. “Teddy told me, you’re still swinging it great, just keep doing what you’re doing, and it was a nice bounce-back on the next.”
There’s a three-way tie for second with Collin Morikawa, Adam Hadwin and Austria’s Sepp Straka all at 6-under for the tournament.
5:15 p.m. Morikawa surges while Scheffler back in driver’s seat
Collin Morikawa is currently in second place after a steady third round that included three birdies on the back nine. The American is in the clubhouse at 6-under for the tournament and within striking distance of the lead. Scottie Scheffler is back in sole possession of first place with a four-shot advantage at 10-under thru 14.
3:58 p.m. Leaderboard tightens
Scottie Scheffler bogeyed on hole 5 and then double bogeyed at the ninth hole, erasing what was a four shot lead during the third round. The American is still at the top of the leaderboard, tied with Adam Hadwin at 8-under after nine holes.
Defending champion Viktor Hovland remains in striking distance at 7-under despite a bogey on the eighth hole.
2:58 p.m. Schauffele and Bhatia struggle at hole 8
The PGA champion bogeyed at 8, and his partner did the same as Xander Schauffele and Akshay Bhatia have identical third round scores as they approach the turn. Both are tied for 11th at 2-under for the tournament.
Meanwhile, the next pairing of Rory McIlroy and Tony Finau just came thru hole 8 and saved par. McIlroy sits tied for 18th at 1-under.
2:41 p.m. Scheffler extends lead
Scottie Scheffler is now up to 11-under after birdies on the second and third hole. He has a four shot lead over Viktor Hovland, the defending champion. Adam Hadwin is now in third, still at 6-under.
The leaders are making their way through the front nine currently with Xander Schauffele about to tee off at the eighth hole. He’s currently at 3-under for the tournament.

More clouds but warmer temperatures for Saturday
Storm Team 4 chief meteorologist Dave Mazza says conditions should remain dry as we move into the latter half of tournament weekend. Temperatures are expected to be in the mid to upper 70s. The day will start out with partly cloudy skies with clouds increasing throughout the day. There is a slim chance for a shower late on Saturday evening but will likely not affect play.
