DUBLIN, Ohio (WCMH) – The Memorial Tournament’s Pro-Am, packed with former star athletes, coaches and actors, teed off Wednesday morning at Muirfield Village.
It’s one of the most exciting days of the week for fans, hoping to interact with the top professionals and amateurs in the sport. Golden State Warriors guard and 4-time NBA champion Stephen Curry was among the star athletes to participate as he played with his brother Seth and father Dell.
Steph, who also paired with Justin Rose and Rickie Fowlers, is no stranger to Muirfield Village or to giving back. “This is the fourth year that me and my wife’s foundation, ‘Eat. Learn. Play.’ has been a co-beneficiary with Nationwide Children’s Hospital,” Curry said. “To have a taste of the hometown, being born in Akron, bringing that impact back to the Bay Area, and all the funds that are going into our foundation and great work we’re trying to do, so pretty special.”
Among others who played included former NFL star quarterback Peyton Manning, who teed off with former wide receivers Brandon Stokely and OSU alum Anthony Gonzalez. They paired with defending champion Scottie Scheffler and Aaron Rai. Other former NFL players that played Wednesday were WR Larry Fitzgerald, QB Alex Smith and former Cincinnati Bengals CB Morgan Trent.
Current Buckeye head coach Ryan Day and former Alabama and LSU coach Nick Saban were joined by Justin Thomas and Corey Conners. Others to play were former LPGA great Michelle Wie-West, NBA star Andre Iguodala, actors Rob Lowe and Chris O’Connell, and McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown.
Brown was back in Dublin after his team’s win on Sunday at the famous Formula One Monaco Grand Prix. “It’s a tough course,” Brown said. “But I’ll tell you what — the Pro-Am, they get a lot of fans out. The pressure, especially when you’re not very good at golf, is pretty immense. But it’s a lot of fun, a lot of great people out here.”
But the day is really all about celebrating the strength of the Nationwide Children’s Hospital ‘Golden Cubs.’ Eight children were invited as part of the Golden Cubs program to be part of the pro-am and meet the golfers and celebrities playing as VIPs. Golden Cubs is “designed to honor and celebrate courageous youth dealing with challenging circumstantial, physical, mental and medical conditions.
At just the age of five, Jace Srey spent nine days in the hospital battling a severe infection. I asked him where he finds the strength to go through some of the things he has in his young life. “Where do you find such strength to go through some of the things that you’ve gone through already?” “My family,” Jace said. “They always encourage me.”
She was meeting players, taking pictures, and fetching autographs. “I’m excited for everything, and it’s going to go into my memories,” Jace said. A VIP experience for a resilient kid and resilient bunch. “It’s definitely an awesome experience, for me, for my family,” Jace’s mother Christy said. “Jace was really sick a while ago, so it’s cool to experience this for him.”
