DUBLIN, Ohio (WCMH) — A wet and windy Tuesday did not slow many of the best in the PGA.
Viktor Hovland, who won the Memorial Tournament in 2023, played 18 holes at Muirfield Monday, and he was one of the last players on the course Tuesday evening after playing through several hours of rain.
With the wet spring, here’s what he learned: “The rough is probably as thick as I’ve ever seen it. So if you’re not good off the tee, you’re just going to be grinding for pars all day and yeah, it’s just it’s just a really tough, tough golf course.”
The wind is also complicating things for now. The forecast, though, looks more favorable heading toward the weekend.
Also on the course, the two men who went the distance last year battling all the way to the 72nd hole. Scottie Scheffler and Collin Morikawa were in that last group last year and Tuesday they played together again. This time by choice, they were also joined by two-time Memorial Tournament winner Patrick Cantlay. All three know how to get around Muirfield Village.
Jack Nicklaus spent almost an hour answering questions inside the clubhouse at Muirfield Village Golf Club, as the 50th Memorial Tournament approaches. A natural time to think about how this all came together more than five decades ago.
“Look back what happened and where it went and how it started from a very, very small, humble beginning and how it’s grown through. And it goes the whole idea of the Memorial Tournament, to bring golf back to Columbus, Ohio, a place where I grew up to thank the people in central Ohio for the support they gave me through all my career,” said Nicklaus. The Golden Bear’s wife Barbara Nicklaus will be the honoree this year, as someone who helped shaped this tournament.
The honoree ceremony will begin on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. on the driving range. Part of a very busy day that also includes the Workday Golden Bear Pro-Am, Salute to Service presented by JobsOhio, the Tournament Tailgate, and the Golden Cubs program.
