STOCKHOLM (AP) — The United States beat Switzerland 1-0 in the final of the ice hockey world championship on Sunday to win the trophy again after 92 years.
Tage Thompson scored the winner 2:02 into overtime. Columbus Blue Jacket Zach Werenski did not score in the close match but remained a major player throughout the tournament, earning six points across the championship. Werenski had more ice time than any other Team USA player during the final.
After winning, Team USA placed late Blue Jacket Johnny Gaudreau’s jersey over the trophy, honoring the hockey star who was killed alongside his brother Matthew last fall when they were struck by an accused drunk driver.
It is the second trophy at the tournament for the U.S. after winning in 1933. Also on the team was the Boston Bruin’s Mason Lohrei, a former Buckeye.
The Americans were also formally awarded the title in 1960 when they won the Olympic tournament and the worlds did not take place.
