COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Domestic Violence Awareness Month has ended, but the effort to find fugitive suspects continues.
In this week’s Warrant Watch, the search for a man accused of holding people inside an apartment at gunpoint.
Investigators said the incident started because of an argument.
Columbus police have identified two of the suspects and are searching for a third.
During October – Domestic Violence Awareness Month – deputy U.S. Marshals and their law enforcement partners focused on serving warrants for domestic violence cases; the fugitive apprehension team made 52 arrests.
“I think it was very successful, but it’s an ongoing thing,” U.S. Marshal for the Southern District of Ohio Michael Black said. “That month was one thing, but we’re not going to stop.”
That included the search for Jason Rushton, 22, who is facing 11 charges from a domestic violence case, among them aggravated burglary, kidnapping, and robbery. One of the victims is a woman who is familiar to Rushton.
“We have some good information of what took place, who all was involved and hopefully we can get just a little bit more information from the public of his whereabouts,” Black said.
According to court records, one afternoon in March of this year, Rushton and two other men knocked on the door of an apartment on Mingus Street on the far south end of Columbus. The men shouted, “trash,” and when someone inside cracked open the door, the suspects pushed open the front door.
“Holding her and a couple other individuals at gunpoint inside the residence for a period of time, robbed them, assaulted them, and then left,” Black said.
The court document said the suspects stole things like a pair of shoes, a backpack, and a safe.
“Someone like this who escalates from an argument to a violent crime of this nature, that’s someone that we’re looking for and want to remove from our neighborhoods,” Black said.
As mentioned, one of the suspects took a pair of shoes but left the ones he was wearing behind. The suspects then left the apartment and sped away in an SUV. Officers have caught up with all of the suspects except Rushton. When police ran the plate, they learned the vehicle belonged to the mother of one of the suspects.
