Gray, chilly holiday weekend, wintry mix arrives early Sunday

High pressure helped dry us out after a soaking New Year’s Day 1-inch rainstorm that began with a coating of ice and ended with evening readings in the low 50s. In its wake, temperatures Saturday struggled to reach 40 degrees.

Sprinkles occurred this evening in advance of a weak storm that will move up the Ohio River valley overnight, bringing periods of light rain mixing with and changing to wet snow. Accumulations will be limited to northern and west-central portions of the state, and generally less than an inch in those locations. Temperatures in central Ohio will stay just above freezing, so wet roads are anticipated early Sunday.

After the system passes to the east, and a secondary low forms along the Mid-Atlantic coast, a few snow/rain showers will be around midday, as temperatures hover near 40 degrees under cloudy skies.

A stray flurry is possible Monday morning with readings again near freezing, with a few breaks in the extensive cloud coverage later in the day. An upper disturbance could bring a few more snow showers late Monday night ending early Tuesday, reinforcing the chilly pattern, with highs in the upper 30s to start the week.

Later in the week, a southern storm looks to brush Ohio Thursday and Friday, with a wintry mix ending as some snow.
