Columbus (WCMH) – For the 2nd day in a row, we hit and tied the record high for the date.   This is something that has never happened before, but we have been close.Record warm starts seem to bring unwanted changes within a week in November:

Looking back at the records… the two other years where we hit 80° in November, within a week we had highs in the 30s or it snowed!!!!First lets look at 1950, we hit 80° on the 1st of November in 1950… then the bottom dropped out:

  • 3 days after hitting 80°, we had a dusting of snow fall, 2 days in a row
  • 9 days after hitting 80°, we had a high of 35° with a dusting of snow
  • On the 25th, we hit a low of 5°
  • On the 25th, we had our snowiest November day on record with 7.5″
  • we ended up with 15.2″ of snow that November (the snowiest November on record)

Next, let look at 1987, our warmest start to November, as we set 3 straight records, and hit 80°:

  • A week after hitting the latest 80° day on record in November, we had a high of only 38°, and we did get a dusting of snow
  • We did also pick of light snowfall on the 20th (0.5″) just like we did in 1950
  • The month actually was quite warm compared to normal
  • It was the 2nd time we would have 3 straight record highs in November, 1931 was the other time

So yes, we see big changes after a record start to the month.  You have to remember that this time of the year we should have highs in the upper 50s to start the month, and only the mid 40s by the end of the month.

While we have had 2 records to start the month, but it does appear that this month will stay above normal for temps.
