MARSEILLE, France (WCMH) — The U.S. Paris Olympics men’s soccer team suffered a 3-0 defeat Wednesday night to the French team in its opener.
The hosts were able to score all three goals in the second half past Columbus Crew goalkeeper Patrick Schulte. It was the US men’s soccer team’s first match at an Olympics since the Beijing Games in 2008.
Schulte made his Olympic debut as he got the start in net for Marko Mitrovic’s side. French manager Thierry Henry’s top talent in the starting 11 included Alexandre Lacazette and Michael Olise.
Neither team developed a good attack or swung momentum in its favor during the first 10 minutes of the match. Schulte saw little to no shots towards him.
France developed a decent chance in the 27th minute when Kouadio Kone rifled a shot that hit off the back of Olise. Team USA had its first good chance in the 38th minute with a counter attack that ended with a Paxten Aaronson shot which was saved by the foot of French goalkeeper Guillaume Restes.
The French tested Schulte a few more times at the end of the first half but the score remained 0-0 at the break. In the second half, the US nearly broke the deadlock in the 60th minute as Djordje Mihailovic smacked the crossbar with a shot from well outside the box.
The first goal of the game did come a few moments later as French veteran striker Alexandre Lacazette shot from outside the box towards the far post and getting the goal past Schulte. The US nearly equalized two minutes later during a goal mouth scramble.
Eight minutes after Lacazette’s goal, the hosts doubled their lead as Olise curled one past Schulte into the side netting, leaving little hope for the United States to earn any points.
France put the icing on the cake as Loic Bade converted a towering header into the net in the 85th minute to secure the 3-0 victory in Marseille. Team USA will play its second group game on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET when they take on New Zealand. France will meet Guinea on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET.
