COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – Ohioans receive more spam calls and texts than residents of any other state in the country, according to a recent study.
Textla, a Texas-based software company, analyzed data from the Federal Trade Commission and Federal Communications Commission to find out which states’ residents reported the most spam calls and texts to the federal agencies last year.
Ohio was the state that was the most plagued by spam calls and texts, with data showing there were 859 complaints submitted per 100,000 residents in 2024.
“If there were an award for suffering through spam, Ohio would take home the gold,” the study read. “The state has the highest number of complaints per capita, with residents constantly bombarded by unwanted calls and texts. Whether it’s fraudulent health insurance offers, fake IRS threats, or spam texts promising too-good-to-be-true deals, Ohioans can’t seem to get a break.”
In second place was Delaware, where residents submitted 850 complaints per 100,000 people. Delaware was followed by Illinois and Arizona, with Virginia and Nebraska tying for fifth place.
The state that submitted the least complaints about spam calls and texts was Alaska, which saw 277 complaints per 100,000 residents. Alaska was followed by North Dakota, Hawaii, Iowa and Wyoming.
To minimize spam calls and texts, Textla recommended using call-blocking apps and reporting spam to the FTC and FCC.
