COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — A 41-year-old man who was arrested Saturday after driving a truck with a snowplow into a vehicle on Interstate-71, leading to a standoff with police, appeared in court on Monday.

Michael Oswalt II was in Franklin County Municipal Court for an arraignment hearing, where he received a bond of $10,000, court records show. He was charged with one felony count of assaulting a police officer after being accused of throwing a wrench and other items at them following a four-car pile-up on I-71. The crash led to a police standoff for five hours.

Oswalt’s bond conditions included a requirement to not engage in further acts of threats or violence. He is set to have a preliminary hearing on Aug. 20. Police said they are seeking additional felony charges with the belief he intentionally went onto the freeway to cause harm.

At 9:20 a.m. on Saturday, officers were called to Interstate 70 East and I-71 South after four cars were involved in a crash. Oswalt was driving a white truck with a snowplow attachment and hit at least one vehicle before he allegedly threw a wrench at an officer.

The incident left four people injured, including the officer hit by a wrench. Oswalt fled the scene and was found a short time later in the area. He would not exit his vehicle, prompting Columbus police to request a SWAT team. He was taken into custody just before 1:45 p.m. Saturday.
