DELAWARE, Ohio (WCMH) — While Kroger announced plans last fall to open a new Powell location, the grocery chain is also forging ahead with a proposal for another Delaware County store.
The retailer is aiming to build a Kroger Marketplace and gas station on 17 vacant acres near the southeast corner of Glenn and Sunbury roads, according to a proposal submitted to the city of Delaware. The property, which the proposal says was previously used for farmland, sits northwest of a Kroger distribution center and east of the Glenwood Commons shopping center.
Delaware’s planning commission recommended approval on Feb. 5 of Kroger’s request for a rezoning amendment, which would change the 17-acre property from a “Community Business District” to a “Commercial Planned Unit Development.” The rezoning request is now in the hands of city council, which will allow for public feedback on the proposal during a Feb. 24 meeting.
If approved, the storefront would mark Kroger’s third location in the city of Delaware. The grocery chain operates the other two at 1840 Columbus Pike and 801 N. Houk Road.
Plans for a Sunbury Road store follow a November announcement that Kroger will construct a 123,000-square-foot Marketplace in Powell near the intersection of Home Road and Sawmill Parkway. With an estimated opening in late 2025, the new Powell storefront will cost about $35 million to construct and begin operating.
Kroger’s November announcement came as the chain opened the new Jerome Village Marketplace at 12116 Sycamore Trace in Plain City. The storefront was boasted as the brand’s first new central Ohio store in 15 years, costing the company about $38 million.
