Meet Max: He is a Brittany Spaniel-Beagle mix on a mission to find rescue dogs, like himself, a loving forever home.
NBC4 Today Weekend Anchor Hattie Hawks and her husband adopted Max from a small Central Ohio rescue called Pets Without Parents. Every week, Max and Hattie introduce viewers to other rescue dogs in search of forever homes.
This week, Hattie and Max stopped by the Pickaway County Dog Shelter to meet a 7-week-old mixed breed who is looking for his forever home and Simba, a beagle mix who is a couple of years old.
The young puppy was born at the shelter just weeks ago. He loves to play and will definitely keep you on your toes.
“He is probably the most active [of the litter],” Marc Rogols, Pickaway County Dog Warden, said. “You can’t tell it by holding him. He is the worst one in terms of getting into trouble.”
With proper training, the puppy can outgrow his rambunctious nature, but for now, he would do best with someone who has the time and patients to spend with him.
“The thing to remember about adopting a puppy [is] they are not trained,” Rogols said.
Next up is Simba, a 2- to 3-year-old beagle mix who came to the shelter as a stray. Simba would do best at a h ome with a fenced-in yard and an active family.
“Beagles are a lot more active than a lot of other dogs,” Rogols said. “They were bred to hunt, run and for that reason, they are kind of escape artists.”
Simba is great with other dogs and loves to play, but like most rescue dogs, he will need time to adjust after living in the shelter.
“When you take a dog home — any adult, no matter the age — they need to decompress,” Rogols explained. “They are leaving a shelter environment for a house. They don’t know your rules. They don’t know your yard, for example, or your boundaries. They have to learn it.”
For more information about adopting the puppy or Simba, visit the Pickaway County Dog Shelter’s website. If you’re interested in adopting other dogs from this no-kill shelter, be sure to mark your calendar for NBC4’s Clear the Shelter event on Aug. 18. Pickaway County will be hosting a barbecue and offering a 50% discount on adoption fees for all dogs.
