COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Ohio’s newest U.S. Senator will be sworn in Tuesday afternoon.

Jon Husted, who served six years as Ohio’s lieutenant governor, was chosen by Gov. Mike DeWine last week to replace JD Vance, who resigned the Senate seat to become vice president. Husted’s swearing-in is scheduled for approximately 5 p.m.

In a social media post accepting the appointment, Husted said his agenda will include finishing President Donald Trump’s wall along the southern border, bringing manufacturing back to Ohio and the United States, cutting government bureaucracy, and fighting the pro-abortion movement.

Husted joins fellow Republican Bernie Moreno as Ohio’s senators, both beginning their first terms in the upper chamber.

Husted will serve at least until November 2026, when he will have to run in a special election; the winner in 2026 will then serve out the rest of Vance’s term, which will end in 2028.

Husted was long-rumored to be the frontrunner as DeWine’s pick, with other prominent Republicans rumored to be in the running, including Ohio businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, former Senate candidate Jane Timken, Secretary of State Frank LaRose, Treasurer Robert Sprague, state Sen. Matt Dolan and attorney Mehek Cooke.
