COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Following his first season as a Blue Jacket, Sean Monahan was named one of three finalists for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, the NHL announced Friday.
The honor is given annually to the player who best exemplifies qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to the sport. The Columbus forward is a finalist alongside Colorado forward Gabriel Landeskog and Minnesota goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury.
Monahan becomes the third player in CBJ history to be named a finalist for the trophy after Nick Foligno (2018-19) and Kevin Dineen, who was a two-time finalist in back-to-back seasons from 2000 to 2002. The 30-year-old from Brampton, Ontario looks to be the first in franchise history to win the award.
In his first year with Columbus, Monahan scored 19 goals and contributed 38 assists for 57 points, despite missing 28 games with a wrist injury. He led the club in points-per-game and ranked third in assists and points.
Earlier this week, defenseman Zach Werenski was named a finalist for the league’s Norris Trophy, which is given to the league’s best defenseman.
The winners of both the Masterton and Norris trophies will be announced during the NHL’s awards show in June.
