COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Despite not taking the ice Monday night, the Columbus Blue Jackets got a little help in the team’s quest to make the Stanley Cup playoffs.

After beating the Eastern Conference-leading Washington Capitals twice this past weekend, the Jackets extended their win streak to four games, and with the Montreal Canadiens losing in a shootout Monday to the last-place Chicago Blackhawks, Columbus’ prospects of making the playoffs remain unlikely but possible.

In order to continue playing after this week, the Blue Jackets would need to win their remaining games while getting a little help from the Canadiens to earn the East division’s second and final wild card spot.

Going into Monday’s games, the Blue Jackets were three points behind the Canadiens for that final spot. As of Tuesday morning, they are now four points out.

Columbus needs to win on the road at Philadelphia on Tuesday night and against the New York Islanders in Columbus on Thursday night — in regulation — and for Montreal to lose to Carolina in regulation on Wednesday night to make the postseason.

If Montreal wins its final game, or earns a point in a shootout loss, it eliminates the Blue Jackets automatically.

Whichever team snags the wild card spot would face the Capitals.
