COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Facing a three-goal deficit on aggregate, the Crew fell short in their comeback attempt against Los Angeles FC in the round of 16 of the CONCACAF Champions Cup. While Columbus scored two goals in the second leg Tuesday at Lower.com Field, the club fell short 4-2 on aggregate.
The loss marks a disappointing early exit from the tournament after making it all the way to the final last season. LAFC advances to the quarterfinals and will play either Inter Miami CF or Cavalier FC. Miami leads on aggregate 2-0 with the second leg to be played on Thursday in Kingston, Jamaica.
Jacen Russell-Rowe got the Crew on the board first after redirecting a cross from Diego Rossi in the tenth minute, scoring his third goal of the season across all competitions.
In the 44th minute, Columbus was awarded a penalty kick after LAFC forward Denis Bouanga committed a foul inside the box. Rossi converted the penalty with a strike to the right side as goalkeeper Hugo Lloris dove left, putting the Crew up 2-0 heading into halftime.
Columbus had numerous chances in the second half, including a shot in stoppage time by Dylan Chambost that got stopped by Lloris. But Los Angeles cemented the victory with a goal in the final moments by Bouanga, his third in the series. The Crew ended up outshooting LAFC 22-7.
Goalkeeper Patrick Schulte, who got called up to the U.S. men’s national team for next week’s Nations League finals, made two saves while Lloris stopped five shots on goal.
Columbus resumes MLS play on Saturday when it travels back to the West Coast to play San Diego FC with kickoff set for 10:30 p.m.
