COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Ohio State University may have found its next head men’s basketball coach, and he’s the guy currently doing the job.

Sources tell NBC4 that current interim head coach Jake Diebler is being targeted to take the job on a full-time basis. The deal could come as early as this week, sources said.

Diebler led the Buckeyes to a late-season push, winning seven of its last nine games — including a win over then-No. 2 Purdue in his first game — and five straight until falling to Illinois in the Big Ten tournament Friday. Diebler was also at the helm when the Buckeyes snapped a 17-game road losing streak.

Ohio State is set to find out Sunday where that last-minute burst will put the team in the post-season, although it’s unlikely that will be in the NCAA Tournament.

Diebler took the reins when former head coach Chris Holtmann was fired last month in the middle of his seventh season.

If hired, this would mark the 37-year-old Diebler’s first head coaching job. He was hired as an assistant coach at OSU before the 2019-20 season.
